They say that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. Who “they” are remains debatable, although this quote is widely attributed to Albert Einstein.
For the purposes of this week’s musings, it matters not a jot.
What DOES matter is being aware of when we are falling into exactly the same patterns….
…with what we believe about ourselves.
Thinking that trying the same tactics THIS week to get to bed at a decent time/eat healthily/exercise more/use social media less that we have unsuccessfully been using for weeks is going to bring us a miraculous breakthrough. Insanity.
Until we notice what is going on, we can’t do anything about it.
When it comes to behaviour, comparisons with others, taking compliments, and a scarcity or abundance mindset, what patterns do you fall into?
What direction do your thoughts take you in – the reflex, gut instinctive response that kicks in first before your objective rational head can bring some perspective?
And importantly, what helps you notice those patterns?
It may be that a certain refrain runs through your head. For instance, something nice happens to someone else, and your immediate reaction is a snarky:
That must be nice…”
A surface level irritation that points to a scarcity mindset and a much deeper need for contentment.
But these recurring refrains serve as useful red flags to highlight that there is an inner problem needing addressed.
However, the next piece of the puzzle is the crucial bit –
Doing something about what you are thinking.
If we notice what is going on, but choose not to address it and yet still expect our behaviour to change, we are demonstrating signs of insanity.
There may be deep seated and difficult reasons for that.
Fear? The security of the familiar? Avoiding vulnerability? Not wanting to ask for help?
And choosing to expose those obstacles and address them takes commitment, discipline, being proactive and clear motivation for why.
But it can be done.
Mindsets can be changed.
Accountability helps, and having someone cheer you on. Next week look out for a special free gift that breaks the pattern of insanity and the power of negative mindsets.
And it’s yours for the taking.
